Come Party For Water Justice in Bolivia with Oscar Olivera!
Join us to challenge corporate control of water and to protect water as a shared natural resource available to all! WHERE? 1830 Belmont Rd, NW Washington, D.C. (Adams Morgan) (It's between 18th and Columbia, accessible from Woodley Park or Dupont Circle on Red line, Columbia Heights on green line. Easy bus access from Columbia Rd if you take the 42; on 18th street are also stops for any of the 90 series. For directions visit: http://belmont1830.com ) WHEN? Saturday, October 7, at 7pm Join Oscar Olivera, a trade union leader from Cochabamba, Bolivia and one of the leaders of the mobilizations that booted Bechtel out of the country in April 2000 in spite of the repression campaign that was launched against them by graduates of the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA), and Rogelio Mayta, lawyer for the victims and families of those killed during the October 2003 mobilization to defend Bolivian natural resources from exploitation by transnational corporations. Watch “Fuera” (Out!), a short documentary film about Suez' abuses in El Alto, Bolivia and the movement for water justice there, and take action to kick Suez out of Bolivia! Suez has failed to extend water service to the poor of Bolivia, intentionally excluding tens of thousands of people from its service area. And, the price of a new water connection is US$445, more than 8 times the monthly minimum wage in Bolivia! These abuses compelled the Bolivian government to end its relationship with Suez, and the two parties are negotiating the company's exit. Now, Suez is threatening to sue Bolivia. The house parties will build support for the movement by generating hundreds of hand-written letters to Suez’ manager in Bolivia, telling the company to leave Bolivia.
Call the Belmont House at 202-234-7075 for more info.
